Jangaard, born 20 Nov 1863 in Valderøy; died 27 Dec 1941 in Valderøy, daughter of Kristian Severin Nilsen Jangaard and Synnøve Olsdtr. Jangaard.
Arnt was born on Arnegarden, Farstad on the island of Lepsøy north of Valderøy. When he married Johanne and moved to the Jangaard farm, he took the name Jangaard as was the custom in Norway at that time.When Kristian and Synnøve's oldest son Peter Mikal moved to Aalesund, Johanne and Arnt took over the farm in 1891. Arnt was a respected member of the community; he was good farmer and had strong religious interests.

Arne was the first of the Jangaards to emigrate to the United States. As the oldest son, he had the right of inheritance ("allodial privilege";"odelsrett") to the Jangaard farm.When his father died in 1917, Arne came home. However, he decided he would rather stay in U.S.A.and conveyed the farm to his mother in 1917. Arne had a good grounding in fishing from growing up on Valderøya and was a progressive and successful fisherman also on the U.S. West Coast. He purse- seined for a while and then branched out into various other types of fisheries. He fished on codfishing schooners in the Bering Sea and also fished halibut from dories off Alaska before he bought his first halibut boat, the "Chancelor" , in the mid 1920's. He and a partner had the longliner "Freya" built in a Tacoma shipyard, and he skippered that boat fishing for halibut and black cod until 1958 when he sold it to the son of his partner. He was also part owner of the "Orbit" and with his son Arnold, the salmon trollers "Arcturus" and "Avalon". Even after he retired in 1958, Arne would take fishing trips on other vessels to relieve the skippers; he enjoyed doing that. After having settled in the United States, he changed the spelling of his last name to Jangord so it would sound more like the Norwegian pronounciation of the name.

Pearl's father, Major M.P.L.Buck, was a career US Army officer who was General "Black Jack" Pershing's aide in WWI. Pearl was first married to Elmer Swanson who was killed in a sawmill accident in Tacoma,Wash.. Their son, Carl, was adopted by Arne and changed his name legally to Jangord while in school.

Kristian Jangaard was a well known and respected fishing skipper on Valderøya, and owned and operated the F/V "Orbit" for many years.
Marie, or "Jangaard-Maja" as she was called, was one of the founders of the Valderøy Husmorlag (Housewife's Organization) in 1937, and served as the President in many periods through the years. At one time there were as many as 70 members and the organization built their own building, "Husmortun". Maja became an honorary member in 1970.

He married on 27 Jun 1925 in Tacoma, WA, Olga Elsa Permatina Sellegren, born 17 Oct 1905 in Tacoma, Wash.; died 5 Mar 1985 in Seattle, Wash., daughter of Peter Hendrickson Sellegren and Annette Hanson Olson.

Alfred grew up on Valderøya, and he recalled that he had a happy childhood in a close-knit family with a strict Christian atmosphere. The Jangaard farm had six cows and a horse so farm work was part of the daily chores. He and his brothers had their own rowboat so they learned to fish and handle boats at an early age. After Alfred finished grammarschool, he went to a private high school in Ørsta (Volda?). After graduating he worked as a fisherman and then joined the merchant marine in 1920 for a year before deciding to emigrate to America. He landed in New York in June 1921 in a large passenger liner and was processed through Ellis Island. From New York he went by train to Seattle, Washington and got a job right away on his brother Arne's halibut boat. He fished with Arne and others for several years and built his own boat , the 57 foot "Orbit" in 1929. In the meantime, he also attended Pacific Lutheran College for part of three winters. In 1949 he had the 60 foot "Aldonna" built for halibut fishing. After he and Olga were married in 1925 they lived in Tacoma, but moved to Seattle in 1936. After retiring from fishing and selling the "Aldonna", he bought a 33 foot cruiser so he could gillnet in Puget Sound during the summer. In 1956 he built a duplex in Ballard and lived there for two years while their new house was being built. He eventually built a total of 19 duplex units in Edmonds, WA. and managed these with his son Donald.After having settled in the United States, he changed the spelling of his last name to Jangard. After Olga died, he moved to the Norse Retirement Home until his death at age 98.

Nils also emigrated to the United States and was a fisherman on the West Coast. He died in Wrangel, Alaska while herring fishing on the "Kodiak".

He married on 2 Feb 1932 in Tacoma, Wash., Christine Modeweg-Carlsen, born 12 Apr 1912 in Tacoma, Wash., daughter of P. Modeweg-Carlsen and Anna Christine Aarøe.
After Colbein emigrated to the United States, he fished on vessels with his Jangaard brothers and cousins for a number of years. In 1940 he bought the "Jean" and fished mostly for salmon until he retired. For a while he also fished dogfish for the livers when there was a shortage of Vitamin A during and after the war. He eventually changed the spelling of his last name to Jangard.

Carl was son of Pearl from a previous marriage with Elmer Swanson; Elmer was killed in a sawmill accident in Tacoma.; she was a widow when Arne married her. Carl was adopted by Arne and changed his name legally to Jangord when still in school. He was a talented musician and was an organist and choir director in many churches in the area. He taught piano and organ and had a few students even in 1997.

After graduating from high school in 1942, Arnold joined the US Maritime Service. He trained as a radio operator in New York and Boston, and while in New York in 1943 he met his cousin Arnt Jangaard and became good friends with him. Arnold sailed as a radio officer on board merchant ships until 1946 and started commercial fishing in 1947 with his father Arne on the "Freya". When the "Freya" was sold in 1958, they went together and bought the salmon troller "Arcturus". He fished in this boat until 1964 when he bought a larger troller "Avalon". In the winter he would drive oil trucks delivering home heating oil in the Seattle area.In 1988 he sold the "Avalon" and retired.In his retirement, he is a ham radio enthusiast (1997).

Arne started as a fisherman as a teenager and was active until he had an emergency operation for gastric ulcer in Lerwick, Shetland in 1965.He then worked for Giskeødegaard at his fish plant. In 1970 the local Council built a new municipal building on the old Jangaard land, and Arne worked as the caretaker there until he retired in 1988. After 1969 there was no more farming on Jangarden and an era was over. Arne died in 1992 of Hodgkin's disease.

Øivind took over his father's part of the fishing vessel "Geir" and was the engineer on board. At age 42 he sold his part and worked at a mechanical plant. He died of leukemia in 1989.

20. Arnt Lars3 Jangaard (Kristian Mikal2, Arnt Mikal Arnesen Farstad1), born 14 Feb 1920 in Valderøy; died 18 Jun 1969 in Staten Island, NY. He married Lucille Ziegler, born in Staten Island, NY, daughter of Henry Frank Ziegler and Rose Theresa Haberkorn.

Arnt went to sea at an early age and sailed on Norwegian and American vessels between 1938 and 1945 as a steward. He crossed the equator many times and received decorations for service in the Atlantic, Pacific and Mediterranean war zones. In June 1942 the ship he was serving on, the M/V "Johnston", was torpedoed off Madagascar, East Africa. The ship was loaded with rubber from India underway to the United States After the war he started an import/export business, the A.L.Jangaard Co. and later joined the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company as an agent in Stapleton, Staten Island,New York in August 1949. He was promoted to Assistant Manager, Huntington, Long Island, N.Y. 1954-1958; Field Training Instructor 1958-1962; District Manager, Marine Park, Canarsie, Brooklyn, N.Y. 1962-63 and District Manager, Great Kills District, 1963-69. Arnt is a graduate of the American College of Life Underwriters and earned the designation of Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU) and received awards for the high quality of his work . He was a member of the Board of Directors for New York Life Underwriters for several years, President of Manager's Association for two years; a member of the Life Underwriters Association, Chamber of Commerce and Kiwanis.

21. John Arthur3 Jangaard (Kristian Mikal2, Arnt Mikal Arnesen Farstad1), born in Valderøy.. He married (1) Kathleen Patricia Collins. He married (2) on 31 Dec 1959 in Aalesund Church, Oddveig Tyra Sørlie, born in Lørenskog, Norway, daughter of Martin Sørlie and Tora Holsten.

John Jangaard followed the seagoing traditions of the family and went to sea at an early age. When Norway was occupied by German forces in 1940, he was out of the country, and decided to join the Norwegian Air Force. He signed off the M/V Thorstrand in Buenos Aires, Argentina in February 1941, and by April 1941 he commenced his pilot training at the Norwegian Air Force training camp Little Norway, Toronto, Canada. After he received his wings, he flew Spitfires from England. After the war he was a pilot in an airline in Norway , but decided in 1949 to move back to England. He worked for three years in an English seafood company and then started his own firm J.Jangaard Ltd. in 1952. In 1954 he purchased W.F.Sproston Ltd.; one of the oldest and most respected seafood companies in London which was founded in 1775. In 1961 W.F.Sproston Ltd. was appointed "Suppliers of Fish" to Her Majesty the Queen and her family.In 1974 he was also appointed Fishmonger to the Queen Mother and in 1985 Supplier of Fish to H.R.H. The Prince of Wales. He is the first Norwegian to hold a Royal Warrant in Britain and it is the first time one person has held warrants to the whole family. In 1988 he sold the business and retired. John Jangaard was also very active in promoting Norway and Norwegian seafood through the Norway Food Centre, the Norwegian Club and programs on the BBC.
