PETER MIKAL JANGAARD (f. 9/9 1861-1922). As oldest son of Kristian and Synnøve, peter Mikal, was supposed to take over the Jangarn, but with the rapid development of the fisheries he chose to move to the growing town of Aalesund. At the age of 19 he ordered built a combined pilot and fishing smack in 1880 "Rasmus Rønneberg", which he skippered. In 1890 he sold this smack and together with another well known pioneer Britanus Berntsen he built a bigger vessel, the "LIV". With this vessel they discovered the possibility of fishing large herring far out at sea with drift nets and this resulted in the later famous Norwegian herring fisheries. This event is described in many books and reports published by our fisheries authorities.

Peter Mikal followed up the development in fisheries and in 1901 he and Berntsen had built one of the first modern fishing steamers, the s/s "Fri". The then legendary sailing vessel "Liv" burned in the great fire in 1904 which completely destroyed the town of Aalesund. The town was quikly rebuilt and the spirit of the new generation of pioneers in modern fishing was much alive. In 1908 Peter Mikal ordered built the modern s/s "Borgund" at Kristiansand Shipyard. He was still on the move for further action when he died in 1922 of an appendicitis operation only 61 years old.

Peter Mikal Jangaard was constantly called upon by the Norwegian fisheries authorities as consultant and was in charge of several expeditions for practical and scientific research in fisheries. He was also captain of the research vessel "Michael Sars" on a research expedition to the North Sea, calling at various British ports. Peter Mikal was one of the founders of Aalesund Fishermen Organization and Aalesund Skipper Association and in many years member of the board of these and other organizations. In 1908 he was member of the jury of the first Norwegian Fisheries Exhibition at Trondheim and in 1915 by the Norwegian Government appointed member of the Customs Revision Committee. Peter Mikal was in several periods members of the town council representing the Liberal party and in 1918 he was election candidate to the Norwegian Storting. In spite of the many commissions he was charged with, peter Mikal was a modest man with a good hearted friendly attitude which made him so well liked everywhere. As the newspapers said in their obituary comments when he died: "Big and husky Peter Jangaard went among us, a typical sea captain, sociable and good hearted, respected and popular among his great circle of friends and others who got in touch with him-etc"

In 1887, May 30th, Peter Mikal married Anne Olsdatter Valderhaug, born 6/4 1858. Anne died June 20th, 1937, 79 years old. Her parents were Ole Knutsen and Karoline Eliasdatter Valderhaug in Olagarn on Valderøy. Karoline born in 1825 and died in 1911, 86 years old, was only child of Elias Larssen Valderhaug, born in the year 1800. He was owner of one of the biggest farms on the island. He was married to Anna Pedersdatter Giskeødegaard (1800-1882). With Anna the third Giske-family was associated with the Jangaard family, which thus is firmly rooted in the historic Island of Giske.

Anne Jangaards father, Ole Knutsen, (1816-1902), 86 years old, came from Nørve, Aalesund, as son of Knut Lillenørve born in 1771. Ole Knutsen had many brothers and sisters, and Karoline and Ole had 5 children and they again 30 children, and further adding hundreds more relatives on Anne Jangaards side of the family. Later generations may observe the average high age of the old folks. Kristian and Synnøve reached the age of 86 and 78. Their daughter Karen was 92, their daughter Marta was 90, and their son Hans is still going strong and turning 95 just as this album is being completed. Anne olsdatter Jangaard was "only" 79, but one sister died at 98, another at 94 and a brother at 90. These old people were not long ill, they just died when their time was out. Anne and Peter Mikal Jangaard had 7 children:

Kristian Oluf (1887-1905), Ole Mikal born 1889, Selma born 1891, Peter Andreas born 1893, Nils Kornelius born 1896, Karoline born 1898, Anne born 1900.
