ARNT ARNESEN JANGAARD (1860-1917).
Johanne (eldest daughter of Synnøve and Kristian) married Arnt Mikal Arnesen Farstad, and the two of them took over the farm in 1891, Synnøve and Kristian's eldest son Peter having moved to Aalesund.
Arnt was born at Arnegarden, Farstad, Lepsøy. His father Arne, from Engesetdalen, Skodje, married Mali Mikkelsdatter Farstad, and they bought half of the Mikkelsgard, calling it Arnegarden. Mali and Arne had 10 children, 5 boys and 5 girls. The oldest one, Johan, took over the farm. Its present owner is Johan's son Mikal J. Farstad. Arne's other childrenare Mikal, Jacob and Petrine who both emigrated to America, Johanne, Helene, Karoline and Sevrine. His son Laurits died young.
Arnt and Johanne took care of the farm until Arnt died in 1917. Arnt was a good farmer. He was deeply religious, wise and highly respected at Valderøy. Johanne was an efficient house-keeper and a good mother, and she lovingly took care of her parents in their old age. Having inherited the best qualities of the family, she was loved and admired by all.
Johanne and Arnt's children, who will continue this album in the seventh generations are:
- Arne born 26/10 1888, married to Pearl Laursen Buch born 11/1 1897 in San Fransisco, California. Live in Seattle, Washington. They have 2 children, Arnold and Syrene, both married in USA. Arne left early for America, but returned at his father's death and bought the farm, thus becoming a freeholder. He returned, however, to the U.S, conveying the farm to his mother in 1917.
- Malla (1890-1966) married Ole N. Urkedal (1889-1960) in 1913. They got the farm in 1923, and from 1957 their son Arne O. Urkedal, is owner of the farm. Earlier the husband took his wife's name if he moved to her family's farm. Today law prohibits this, hence Malla and Ole Urkedal could not use Jangaard as their surname. Malla and Ole have 6 children, all married and living at Valderøy: Marie, Petra, Judith, Arne, Oddmund and Øyvind. The sons and one sister have built their homes on Jangarden.
- Kristian Mikal Jangaard (1895-1950), fisherman and fishing-vessel owner. He married Marie Margrethe Hessen from Aalesund born 11/12 1900 and built their home on Jangarn. They had 6 children: Sigfred Lauritz died as a child - the others are Arnt Lars living in Staten Island, N.Y., John Arthur living in London, Johanne Svanhild lives in Aalesund, Kjell Mindor lives at Arnheim on Jangarn and Erling Sigfred live in Long Island, N.Y. USA
- Alfred (1897), ship-master and ship owner in Seattle, Wash., later building contractor, married to Olga Laursen Buck. Their children Arleen and Donald, both live in Seattle.
- Kolbein Elias (1903), married Kristine and have 4 children: Alvin, JoAnn, Keith and Kenneth. Kolbein has now his own salmontrawler in Tacoma, Wash.
Three of Johanne and Arnt's children died young. Johanne and Arnt were the last owners of the farm by the name of Jangaard. Jangaard had been an independent farm as far back as goes the Valderøy farm-record, and it has always been a centre of the island. The rapid development of later years will probably change the farm from agricultural land to housing area, and its honorable role in the history of Valderøy will be but a memory.
Thus the emigrants from Jangarden will carry on the Jangaard name, without any direct connection with the family cradle. This album will commememorate the ancestors who built and lived at Jangaarden, and laid the foundation for those descendants now carrying the family name. May they always honor it!
